Abstract: Inadequacies in the provisions for training have been cited as one of the reasons for the small numbers of well-trained and qualified construction site managers in the UK construction industry.  Underpinning this argument is that the job of the site managers are significantly influenced by the situational, organizational and personal variables that impact their job, but this was not adequately considered in the Training Needs Analysis (TNA) when designing the training at the industry level.A research was carried out to investigate the validity of this claim.  On the assumption that these variables can have a significant influence on the roles and tasks of site managers, the research sought to establish the impact of these variables on the Training Needs Analysis (TNA) and the consequent training offered.  The findings suggest that the roles and tasks of site managers' are generally common across the varied background site managers, construction organisations and ty!
pes of projects.  This suggests that a generic training model can be established at the industry level.  The roles and tasks identified should be a key terms of reference in the design and delivery of the training.
